Hello and Welcome to the New Country

I am the owner of Clough Bottom Farm, a heavily diversified, 360 acre, organic working farm in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. Since taking over the farm in 1983 I have transformed the farm from its traditional roots into a highly diversified farm that offers a range of complimentary services and products to both the consumer and business-to-business market. I have an engineering background and a passion for sustainability and renewable energy - it is this practical expertise that I have used as a foundation to the Clough Bottom vision. Each of the businesses I run is based on environmental best practice, and common to each is a determination to run each venture in as sustainable way as is humanly possible! My ultimate vision is to showcase to others how businesses can be run in harmony with nature, and I am frequently asked to guest speak at events on topics such as sustainability and diversification.

In 1991 I set up with my partner - what is today - a highly successful corporate training company, initially using the farmhouse as an office and training rooms, before moving into a fully-converted farm barn. In 2000 I converted one of the other farm buildings into a luxury, 4 Star holiday cottage. This cottage - and our two later additions - provided multi-award winning self-catering holiday accommodation and demonstrated how a visitor tourism experience can operate sustainably. These cottages are now available for long-term lets through Millbrooke Property Lettings & Management, Whalley. Throughout this succession of 'organic diversification', and as a result of my passion for conservation projects and tree planting I also grow and sell mature trees and shrubs, and have over 5,000 specimens grown for domestic and professional buyers.

Some of the projects I have implemented at the farm include a water borehole and bio-diesel processing plant, in addition to constantly researching and developing strategies to include wind power, hydro power and biomass/CHP. I have sponsored and mentored a renewable energy initiative undertaken by a local education institution and have given many presentations to local businesses and industry groups on how to translate the theory into workable business solutions. If you would like to book me to talk at an event or would like to to find out more about planning within National Parks, diversification, conservation, green and sustainable technologies or climate change, please don't hesitate to contact me.
