Clough Bottom Evergreens
Ilex aquifolium - Common holly
A useful evergreen shrub that can be grown as a specimen tree, clipped bushes or as a hedge. Plants are either male or female and both sexes are required for the female plants to produce their winter berries, which appear from late-autumn to mind-winter.
Mahonia x media - Winter sun
A dense, upright evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and spineless stems. Grown for its densely packed fragrant yellow flowers which are frost resistant and are produced from autumn to early winter.
Prunus Iusitanica - Portugal laurel
Usually planted to make a large hedge, screen or windbreak and a close relative of the cherry laurel, this species from Spain and Portugal is a beautiful shrub, eventually making a large, shapely tree if allowed to grow naturally. The leaves are an attractive shade of green, reddish in colour when young, on red stalks, with white, sweet smelling flowers in early summer.
Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia - Cherry laurel
Dense, bushy evergreen shrub with large, dark green, leathery, shiny leaves with a finely serrated margin. The flower buds appear in early spring which flower in early summer. The small flowers have five creamy-white petals and numerous yellowish stamens. The fruit is a small cherry that turns black when ripe in early autumn. Often used for screening and hedging, for landscaping and for ground cover.
Prunus maackii - Manchurian cherry
A lovely ornamental tree that produces delicate bunches of white blossom, followed by rich green leaves that provide dappled shade throughout the summer. If the summer is warm enough these leaves turn beautiful shades of red and gold in the autumn. Even in winter, the cinnamon-coloured, shiny bark provides colour, texture and interest. As the tree ages, the bark begins to peel back, revealing new golden-brown growth underneath.
Cryptomeria japonica - Japanese cedar
A member of the cypress family, the Japanese cedar has needles arranged spirally around leaf shoots. Although individually fine, the number of these branches makes for a very dense foliage, especially on the more mature plants. As a result weeds find it hard to grow in its shade. The cones of the Japanese cedar have a number of distinctive curved spines on each scale and take a year to fully ripen at which point they are dark brown and woody.
Thuja occidentalis 'Holmstrup' - White cedar
A semi-dwarf, evergreen conifer with dense, apple-green needles which are produced in overlapping, flattened sprays that radiate vertically. It gradually grows in a conical/narrow pyramid shape. With slow to average growth, you can expect approximately 15-20cm new growth annually. Will tolerate the coldest winter frosts, whilst keeping excellent rich green colour and foliage throughout the winter. An excellent and attractive hedging or specimen plant.
Thuja Rheingold - Cedar
A neat, small conifer with a compact, squat-conical shape and 'stringy' textured foliage, which in summer is brassy-gold. In late spring, the new growth adds pinkish-bronze highlights, especially towards the top of the plant and in winter, the foliage becomes strongly orange-toned. Its good colour, shape and size make it useful in smaller gardens as a feature plant.
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurora' - Cedar
A very slow growing conifer with twisted sprays of golden-yellow foliage which deepens in colour in the winter.
Cedrus deodara - Deodar cedar/Himalayan cedar
A large coniferous tree with a conical form and slightly drooping habit. With needle-like foliage up to 5 cm long it can grow up to 100 ft tall and 30 ft wide with spreading branches and pendant branch tips. Light brown cones in the autumn.
Cedrus libani - Lebanon cedar
The shelf-like branches of this beautiful evergreen make it an exceptionally distinctive and majestic tree - suitable for a larger garden. The barrel-shaped cones are up to 15cm long and take two years to ripen.
Cedrus atlantica glauca - Blue Atlas cedar
A striking tree with vivid, glaucous blue-green foliage, often planted as a specimen tree in lawns. A large, conical tree and a crown that becomes umbrella-shaped over time.
Cupressocyparis leylandii Castlewellan - Golden leylandii
A beautiful, fast-growing dense evergreen conifer with golden foliage. Growing 2-2.5ft (60-75cm) a year, it can be kept as a small, neat hedge as long as it is regularly pruned in summer and autumn. Happiest in full sun or partial shade, and most soils other than wet sites.
Cupressocyparis leylandii - Leylandii
The fastest growing heging plant of all (grows between 75-90cm a year), and with an unfortunate reputation when not kept to a maintainable height, the Leylandii still has some superb attributes for those looking for an affordable hedging solution that provides good height. Regular clipping of the mid-green spray like citrus scented foliage in mid-summer and autumn can make this a dense, formal hedge, ideal as a windbreak and providing excellent noise reduction. It likes sun or partial shade, well-drained soil and is suitable for seaside gardens.
Abies Koreana - Korean fir
This broadly conical, hardy conifer has a pyramidal form and features densly packed dark shiny needles that are bright green to the underside. From an early age it produces upright, deep purple cylindrical cones with green inverted seed bracts in mid-autumn. Rows of green and pink upright male flowers are also borne in late spring.
Griselinia littoralis - New Zealand Privet
A vigorous, dense evergreen with handsome, broad, glossy pale apple-green leathery leaves upto 4 inches (10cm) long. Small yellow tail-like flowers in May. Best grown against a warm sheltered wall and given winter protection when the temperature drops below -5c. Likes mild seaside gardens where they can reach up to 8 metres (26 ft), elsewhere cold can limit its size.
Phormium tenax - New Zealand Flax
A striking evergreen element in any hot border scheme. They make bold clumps of long, striking, sword-shaped leaves with tall, open flower-spikes on mature plants. Phormiums can be damaged by cold winds and severe frosts and will benefit from some protection.
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Columnaris' - False cypress
A small, narrow, conical tree with densely packed blue-grey foliage on ascending branches. Slightly scented, it produces small and spherical cones.
Juniperus 'chinesis Stricta' - Chinese juniper
Featuring dense, ascending branches of aromatice, soft blue-green leaves and spherical violet/brown cones, the needle-like foliage of this narrowly conical coniferous shrub turns steely-blue in winter. An attractive and hardy specimen plant for a sunny or partly shady shrub border.
Juniperus scopulorum - Skyrocket
A very striking, eye-catching plant with a long, lean conical shape. The needle-like light grey-green foliage does not change much all year round, though is slightly brighter in late spring.
Juniperus chinesis 'Hetzie' - Juniper
An upright juniper cultivar with a spreading habit and a very rigid, prickly feel to it. The handsome foliage is grey-green in colour, and commonly used for hedging, screening or as a windbreak. A heavy fruit, cone and berry producer, its foliage is very aromatic when rubbed or crushed.
Photinia - Red robin
Photinia Red Robin is grown for the spectacular new red foliage that turns a rich, glossy green as adult foliage. Pruning throughout the year helps to encourage continious new growth. Quick growing once extablished, the best time to prune is at the start of the growing season - late March/early April.
Rhododendron
Producing great blocks of colour as the branches are smothered by a profusion of beautiful flowers.
Viburnum Davidii
A compact, evergreen shrub producing a spreading mound of branching stems and large, shiny leathery leaves. Dull white flowers are produced, but on female plants these are followed by egg-shaped fruits which are bright turquoise blue and last through until winter, when they contrast beautifully against the rich green foliage.
Yew
A small evergreen tree or large shrub with a rounded habit and dense, linear leaves.
Yucca
A striking evergreen with tall stout stems and clusters of white flowers.
Pieris
A pretty, ornamental plant with 'lily of the valley' like flowers in early spring.
Skimia
A delightful, compact evergreen shrub that provides all year round colour.
